CrashPlan Versus BackBlaze for Synology NAS

by Joshua Jacobs January 1, 2022

Recently I made the switch from CrashPlan to BackBlaze for backing up my Synology NAS offsite. There are a lot of options out there for offsite backup. Here is a breakdown of why I made the switch

    CrashPlan

I’ve used CrashPlan for offsite backups since 2017. While their service doesn’t have the fastest transfer speeds it has always been reliable. Over time my storage requirements have increased, now with over 11 TB of data to backup. CrashPlan seemed to work well for a time but once I got past the 4 TB mark, everything seemed to fall apart.

CrashPlan, now owned by Code42 and called CrashPlan for Small Business is $10/month for unlimited storage.

CrashPlan is a natural choice for Synology users as there is an excellent docker container that will directly integrate with your Synology and automatically sync your folders with CrashPlan.

    BackBlaze Personal

Blackblaze offers multiple plans to backup your Synology NAS. You can opt to use their B2 Cloud Storage which has a direct integration with Hyper Backups but is more expensive or their unlimited storage using their personal cloud plan.

There is a nice trick for those that are already backing up their Synology to an external hard drive. Blackblaze personal cloud plans allow you to also backup external drives, so I simply connect by backup external drive to my computer and after a couple days of syncing I’m good to go!
